Chris Shen, M.D., has over 15 years of experience in medical device design and innovation. At Essex Woodlands, Dr. Shen focuses on investments in the biopharmaceutical and medical device sectors.
Dr. Shen joined Essex Woodlands from New Enterprise Associates, a global, diversified venture firm. Prior to joining NEA, Dr. Shen held the position of Senior Design Engineer at Guidant Corporation’s Neurovascular Venture, an internal start-up, where he invented and commercialized a minimally-invasive therapy for the treatment of acute ischemic stroke. Dr. Shen also worked in Japan as a Design Engineer for Pfizer, Inc.’s Strategic Innovation Group, an internal medical technology incubator.
Dr. Shen holds an appointment at Stanford University as Consulting Professor of Medicine, teaching courses on medical technology innovation. He is also the US-based Executive Director of the Singapore-Stanford Biodesign Program. Dr. Shen is a Board member of the Johns Hopkins Alliance for Science and Technology Development as well as an Advisor to the Johns Hopkins Center for Bioengineering, Innovation and Design. Dr. Shen has nine patents issued and several pending in the fields of interventional neuroradiology and interventional cardiology.
Dr. Shen joined Essex Woodlands as Principal in the Palo Alto office in May 2007.
