The
Essex Woodlands Partnership has one of the most experienced teams
investing in healthcare today. It brings together seasoned healthcare
investors with experienced entrepreneurs and leading scientific and
clinical practitioners.
The
Managing Directors are James Currie, Ron Eastman, Jeff Himawan, PhD,
Guido Neels, Mark Pacala,
Martin Sutter, Immanuel Thangaraj, Petri Vainio, MD, PhD, and Steve Wiggins. The nine
Managing Directors bring over 230 years of combined experience investing
in and managing healthcare enterprises. A unique characteristic of the
Partnership is that each Managing Director has been involved in a
variety of operating backgrounds in addition to being a successful
venture capital investor. The diversity and depth of their backgrounds
have enabled them to be successful in each of the healthcare segments
and to contribute to the development of portfolio companies.
Partners Cynthia Doerr, MD, Gilbert Gonzales, MD, Frank Young, MD, PhD
and Scott Barry bring valuable clinical and additional
entrepreneurial expertise. The Partnership has a long history of
incorporating support from and developing Partners. Current and
former Partners, who are now Managing Directors, have been
involved in the founding, cofounding or senior management positions of
seven Essex Woodlands portfolio companies prior to joining the
Partnership.
The
Partnership has always sought the experience and opinions of
thought-leaders to evaluate technologies and markets for investment
consideration. Throughout this process, the
Partnership has developed trusted relationships with key individuals in
areas of emerging growth. With the advent of Fund V, this vital network
was formalized with the role of Adjunct Partner. Adjunct Partners Thomas
Caskey, MD, Nic Chronos, MD, Phyllis Gardner, MD, Michael Gertner, MD
and Lisa Ricciardi, and senior advisors Goran Ando, MD and Karen Katen,
work part-time in evaluating the merits
of products, accessing market opportunities and providing guidance in
clinical trial design and FDA approval. Each Adjunct Partner functions
in his or her own unique capacity, but all participate with significant
commitment of time and intellectual capability.
