Gilbert Gonzales, MD, brings
30 years of experience as a physician and entrepreneur. His medical
career includes positions such as Vice Chairman of the Department of
Neurology and Associate Professor of Neurology at the Mayo Clinic
Scottsdale. In
1998, he joined Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center ("MSKCC") as an
attending physician and researcher in the Department of Neurology, and
Division of Pain and Palliative Care. While at MSKCC, Dr. Gonzales
served as a voting member of the FDA's Neurological and Neurosurgical
Devices Section from 1996 to 1999 and as a consultant to the FDA Dental
Devices Section from 1997 to 2002. In 2000, he co-founded Drug
Enhancement Corporation of America, LLC, a device and drug delivery
development company.
Dr. Gonzales joined Essex Woodlands in 2001 as an Adjunct Partner. Prior
to joining the Partnership, he was involved in the founding of numerous
Essex Woodlands companies, including
Richwood (Shire) Pharmaceuticals,
Integrity Pharmaceuticals, and
PediaMed Pharmaceuticals, and founded or
co-founded
Xanodyne Pharmaceutical,
Prism Pharmaceuticals, Serene Medical and
Clear Vascular. Dr. Gonzales played a key role in the Partnership's
investment in
Acura Pharmaceuticals (formerly Halsey Pharmaceuticals).
He currently serves on the Board of Directors of
Clear Vascular.
Dr. Gonzales holds a Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Medicine from
University of Arizona, where he subsequently completed his residency in
neurology. He completed his cancer pain fellowship training at MSKCC
where he served as an attending physician and has written over 60
publications. He has written a number of patents in the fields of drug
delivery platform technologies, drug life cycle management techniques,
new devices
and device manufacturing processes.
