Petri Vainio, MD, PhD, joined Essex Woodlands as Managing Director
in 2004. He has nearly 20 years of experience as a venture capital
investor. Dr. Vainio spent more than 10 years, starting in 1988, as a
General Partner of Sierra Ventures, one of Silicon Valley's leading
venture capital firms with over $1 billion under management. While at
Sierra, Dr. Vainio was a General Partner in five successive funds and
led their healthcare investment practice. Dr. Vainio has been a lead
investor in numerous successful healthcare companies in all sectors of
healthcare including
pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medical devices and healthcare services.
He has served on the board of directors of over 20 private and public
healthcare companies. He has
helped these companies raise over $1 billion in venture capital financing and reach
an aggregate market value of over $10 billion.
Dr. Vainio sits on the Board of
Directors of
Chroma Therapeutics,
Prism Pharmaceuticals,
EUSA
Pharmaceuticals,
Healthcare Brands International and several other private companies.
Dr. Vainio holds a Doctor of Medicine and a Doctor of Philosophy in
biochemistry with highest academic honors from the University of
Helsinki, and a Masters in Business Administration from Stanford
University.
