Managing Directors |

Martin Sutter is one of the two founding managing directors of Essex
Woodlands. Educated in chemical engineering and finance, he has more than 30 years of management experience in operations, marketing, finance and venture capital. He began his career in management consulting with Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co. in 1977 and moved to Mitchell Energy & Development Corp. ("MEDC") shortly thereafter. During his 15 years at MEDC, he held various management positions where he oversaw operating units generating over $100 million in operating profits annually.
In 1984, Mr. Sutter founded and managed The Woodlands Venture Capital Company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of MEDC, and in 1988, he formed The Woodlands Venture Partners, an independent venture capital partnership. During his tenure with both organizations, he founded a number of successful healthcare companies originating from various institutions of the world renowned Texas Medical Center.
As a consequence of numerous co-investments with James Currie, Mr. Sutter merged his venture practice with Essex Venture Partners to form Essex Woodlands Health Ventures in 1994. He serves on the Board of Directors of
Abiomed, Inc. (NASDAQ: ABMD), ATS Medical (NASDAQ: ATSI) and QSpex Technologies, Inc.
He formerly sat on the Board of
LifeCell (NASDAQ: "LIFC")
which was acquired by Kinetic Concepts, Inc. (KCI) in May 2008,
Confluent Surgical,
which was acquired by Tyco International in July 2006,
Rinat Neuroscience, which was
acquired by Pfizer, Inc. in April 2006, St
Francis Medical Technologies, which was acquired by Kyphon,
Inc. in December 2006, and BioForm Medical, Inc., which was acquired by Merz GmbH & Co KGaA.
He is also responsible for the Partnership’s investments in
NeoVista and
Spinal Concepts,
which was acquired by Abbott Laboratories in June 2003. He serves as an Advisory Council Member for the Board of the Brown Foundation Institute of Molecular Medicine for the Prevention of Human Diseases at the University of Texas Health Science Center.
Mr. Sutter holds a B.S. from Louisiana State University and an M.B.A. from the University of Houston.
